The Case for Cork: What a Himalayan Flood Has to Do With What's in Your Bag

Last month, a wall of water and rock tore down a valley in Nepal. Dozens of bridges were destroyed, roads were wiped out, and thousands of people were left missing. It wasn't a storm that started it. It was a single glacier, sitting more than 5,000 metres up, where the slope gave way and sent a catastrophic flood crashing down onto the villages below. Events like this used to happen once in a generation. Climate historian Ruth Gamble now describes them as happening "every year… more and more."
It's easy to read a headline like that and file it under "somewhere else, not my problem." But the material story behind that flood runs closer to home than it looks — all the way to the material of a toiletry travel bag.
Why the "Third Pole" Is Coming Apart
The Himalayas, together with the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, hold more ice than anywhere on Earth outside the two poles — enough to earn the nickname "the third pole." More than 55,000 glaciers sit across this region, feeding the rivers that close to two billion people rely on for drinking water and irrigation.
That ice is vanishing fast — a visible symptom of global warming, with the region heating faster than the global average. Two things are happening as a result. Glacial lakes are forming and swelling behind unstable natural dams — researchers count more than 1,466 of them now, most having appeared only since the mid-20th century — and when those dams fail, the result is a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF): a sudden, violent surge of water, ice and debris with almost no warning. At the same time, permafrost that has held these slopes together for millennia is thawing — roughly 8,340 square kilometres of it disappeared between the early 2000s and 2020 alone. As one glaciologist put it, ice "plays the role of the glue between the rocks." Take the glue away, and the mountain starts coming down.
None of this happens by accident. It's climate change: we're still burning fossil fuels at a rate the planet can't absorb.
Plastic Never Left the Fossil Fuel Family
Here's the part that rarely gets said plainly: plastic is not a separate problem from fossil fuels — it's the same industry wearing a different coat. Roughly 98% of single-use plastic comes directly from petrochemicals refined from oil and gas. In 2019 alone, plastic production and disposal generated an estimated 1.8 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
As the world slowly weans off petrol for transport, oil and gas companies are leaning harder into plastic as their next growth engine — petrochemicals are projected to drive more than a third of global oil demand growth through 2030, and nearly half of it through 2050. Global plastic production is expected to triple by 2060. Of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste humanity has made so far, less than 10% has ever been recycled.
And in one of the more unsettling findings of recent years, researchers sampling snow and stream water near the summit of Mount Everest found microplastic fibres at the highest altitude ever recorded on the planet — evidence that plastic pollution has now reached the roof of the world. The same mountains being destabilised by fossil-fuel-driven warming are now carrying fragments of the very industry warming them. It's a closed loop, and an ugly one.
Where Cork Comes In
This is where an everyday essential — the toiletry and cosmetic bag — turns out to matter more than it looks. Most of them are made from PVC, polyurethane ("PU leather"), or nylon blends: petroleum-based plastics that are laminated and zippered together in ways that make them essentially unrecyclable, then discarded after a year or two to sit in landfill for centuries. And it's a fast-growing essential — the global travel toiletry bag market is expanding at close to 6.7% a year, projected to reach US$8.6 billion by 2034, largely on the back of the ongoing travel boom. Every year, more of these bags get made, and most of them are still made from oil.
Cork is one of the more elegant answers sitting in plain sight. It's harvested from the bark of the cork oak without felling the tree — the bark regrows and is typically re-harvested every nine years, and cork oak forests are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the Mediterranean, absorbing significant carbon as they grow and keeping the material's own carbon footprint low. As a fabric, cork is naturally water-resistant, wipes clean, is genuinely durable, fully biodegradable, and requires no petroleum feedstock at any stage of its life. In keeping with other plant-based materials like organic cotton canvas, hemp, or washable paper, cork gives you an eco-friendly toiletry bag that does everything the plastic version does, minus the centuries in landfill and the demand it quietly places on new oil and gas extraction.
Switching one bag from PVC to cork from CORKSTORE won't stabilise a slope in Nepal. Nobody should claim it will. But the mountain and the material sitting on your bathroom shelf are downstream of the very same industry, and every purchase that doesn't renew demand for virgin petrochemical plastic is one small vote against an industry currently planning to triple its output over the next several decades.
